About the Film

La La Land (2016) is widely recognized for its iconic scenes at Griffith Observatory and within Griffith Park. The production is one of dozens from Hollywood that have chosen to shoot at the Observatory since it first opened to the public in 1935.

Writer and director Damien Chazelle drew directly from the legacy of Rebel Without a Cause—the 1955 James Dean classic that became the first film to star Griffith Observatory as itself, as well as the first to show the planetarium on screen for its actual purpose.

In La La Land, Sebastian and Mia attend a screening of Rebel Without a Cause before visiting the Observatory, where they share a transcendent evening under the planetarium dome.

Help Us Keep the City of Stars Shining

The Samuel Oschin Planetarium served as the inspiration for one of La La Land’s most memorable sequences.

This year marks 20 years since the Planetarium reopened following Griffith Observatory’s major renovation. Since then, it’s welcomed more than six million visitors, and now hosts nearly 350,000 guests a year.

Under the 75-foot dome, trained presenters guide audiences through live tours of the night sky. Most planetariums have replaced their presenters with pre-recorded shows. Griffith Observatory hasn’t. It believes in people telling the story of the stars to other people.

Griffith Observatory Foundation aims to raise $50,000 this summer to support the people and programs that keep the Planetarium a trusted resource for visitors of every age.

If you’ve ever been inspired by a Samuel Oschin Planetarium show, consider making a gift today. Every contribution—no matter the size—matters.

This special event is hosted by Griffith Observatory Foundation and directly supports Griffith Observatory in its mission of inspiring everyone to observe, ponder, and understand the sky.
